Acted as Independent Safety Advisers and Auditors (ISAs) for safety critical software in naval applications. Work included advising on migration between different versions of Defence Standard 00-56. Issues addressed included integrity of data, changes to compilers, production of overall safety arguments, including supporting "proven in use" arguments in the presence of controlled change to the system and software.
Advised on the replacement of computer used as part of the UK Air Traffic Control (ATC) network.
Developed novel techniques to help in system and software safety engineering for a range of aircraft programmes, recently focusing on flight clearance of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA).
Provided education and training on safety engineering principles and practices and on specialised topics, including safety case development. This included awareness seminars on software and safety issues for senior staff in industry and in government
Provided advice on safety case strategy for UK railway signalling schemes in the context of the "Yellow Book" and European CENELEC standards. Issues addressed included European regulatory cross-acceptance, integrating generic product, generic application and specific application safety cases, and compliance with the HSE Railway Safety Case Assessment Principles.
Provided advice on strategy for flight clearing safety critical ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) including reviewing safety analyses of complex devices. Developed the safety case strategy, and helped to deal with the effects of late changes, which threatened to undermine the system design and safety strategy.
Undertaken review and assessment of many complex items of defence equipment, providing advice on risk management strategies. These results have been used to make recommendations to senior MoD personnel and standard setting bodies.
Undertaken reviews of system and soft ware designs to identify commercial, technical and certification risks.
Development of standards both for individual organisations, and as contributors to broader international programmes.
